The concept of Hybrid Battery Management
Embedded Backupower™ is a unique, patented technology that combines different chemistries of batteries into a portable device (i.e. a standard AA Alkaline battery combined with a Li-Ion battery). It is based on Techtium's revolutionary Hybrid Battery Management Technology.
Choosing one type of battery only has an inherent limitation because:
- A rechargeable battery requires large external chargers that need an external power source (outlet, car), whereby a spare rechargeable battery is expensive, not readily obtainable, and need to be kept charged.
- A disposable battery cannot be reused, making it expensive for long-term everyday use. In addition, disposable batteries have high internal resistance, which prevents them from being able to provide the high current peaks typical to many mobile devices.
Techtium’s Hybrid Battery Management products provide the link between the disposable (primary) battery and the rechargeable (main) battery, thereby creating a hybrid battery.
How it works?
The disposable (primary) battery charges the rechargeable (main) battery.
Techtium TEC103 based circuit controlls the current flow and the voltage convertion utilizing specially-designed algorithms, such that the control circuit yields optimal energy transfer from the primary Alkaline battery.
In cellular applications, which typically require high current peaks, Techtium’s solution ensures that only the rechargeable battery provides the short current peaks, even while the disposable battery is the one providing most of average power.
Actually, the disposable battery does not "see" the portable device, and the portable device does not “know” a disposable battery is present. Techtium’s circuit is the “brain” behind the hybrid battery, controlling the transfer of energy from the disposable battery to the rechargeable battery.
The mobile device is powered directly by the main battery, just as in standard non-hybrid configurations. Thus embedding Techtium's Hybrid Battery technology into existing products is simple and easy.
